While we do love a tiny bit of photoshopping gossip, the new Elle cover featuring Lilly Allen needs some clarity. Because, truly this is hardly the photoshop of horrors that the Daily Mail and Jezebel have been calling it.
The general public do need atrocious photoshop changes pointed out as there needs to be some truth and valiance in style magazine covers, however at the same time the fashion industry sells inspiration and aspiration. Which is the key point to this Lilly Allen cover.
The Daily Mail readers are hardly the most intelligent members of society and Jezebel uses a comment from one ” What a difference between the magazine cover and her out shopping in London. I know which one I would rather wake up next to in the morning! “. Margaret Hartmann from Jezebel hits back with this aggressive comment ” Fair enough, “Roger.” If you want to sleep with a magazine featuring a digitally-altered photo rather than a living, breathing woman, that’s fine by us. But watch out — papercuts to the genital area must be particularly nasty “
Which proves the point which is about to be made. The fashion industry sells aspiration as we have already mentioned. To be honest, this looks like a slightly sexier, sleeker Lily Allen. Nothing out of the ordinary, that lighting and makeup could not achieve… yet this already brings out some seriously unnecessary and disgusting personal attacks. How does one know the “Roger” character was not referring to the original Lily? Jezebel and Margaret Hartmann Assumed the worst.
The question is not whether mild re-touching is acceptable, the question is when will society and the tabloid press become positive, god forbid valiant and enthusiastic?
Why does the natural beauty of some, bring out the truly ugly personalities of others?
